About
A small agency, deliberately
Lucent Codeworks exists because a lot of good software work is done badly by large organisations with the wrong incentives — and because the alternative, hiring a permanent team for a temporary problem, is not always the right answer either.
Where the name comes from
Lucent means clear — light passing straight through, nothing hidden. Most production systems are the opposite: layers of decisions made by people who have moved on, for reasons nobody wrote down, holding up something a business now depends on completely.
Codeworks is the job. A works is a place where things get made and repaired by people who know the material. You do not guess your way through a system like that — you read it, map it, and change it carefully until you can see all the way into it. Most of our work is that: making something legible enough to be safe to touch.
What we believe
Four positions that shape everything else
Understand before you build
Most expensive mistakes are made in the first two weeks, by people confident they already knew the problem. We spend longer than is comfortable making sure we do.
The boring choice is usually right
Novel technology should earn its place against a specific requirement. Defaulting to it because it is interesting is a cost your successors pay, not you.
Complexity is a budget
Every abstraction, service and dependency spends some of it. We would rather leave headroom for the complexity your domain genuinely requires.
Say the awkward thing early
Slipping dates, bad assumptions, work that is not going to pay off — all of it gets cheaper the sooner it is said out loud. We would rather have that conversation than protect a relationship by staying quiet.
How we work day to day
We work remotely, in your repositories, on your board. You get the engineers directly — in your Slack, in your standups if you want us there, and in the pull requests either way. There is no account manager translating between you and the people writing the code, because that role mostly exists to absorb bad news.
Engagements are scoped and time-boxed rather than open-ended. We would rather finish, hand over properly and be invited back than quietly become a line item nobody reviews.
Working with us
If you have a problem you think fits, the fastest route is to describe it in as much detail as you can stand and send it over. We will tell you what we think, whether or not there is an engagement in it.
You can also just email [email protected].
Next step
Tell us what is not working
Describe the problem in your own words. If we are the wrong people for it, we will say so and point you somewhere better.
